3 Reasons a Spring Garage Sale Could Keep Seniors Safer at Home

Keeping seniors safe at home is often a top concern among family members. This may be for aging grandparents, parents, a spouse, siblings, or other loved ones. Whoever it is that may be getting older and having difficulty with their mobility, it’s absolutely essential to make sure the house is as safe as possible.

Senior Home Safety in Slatington PA: Garage Sales

With spring in the air, garage sales, tag sales, and other ways people take advantage of getting rid of excess items they have in their house is a wonderful way to help improve safety for some seniors. There are numerous reasons why a spring garage sale is a great idea.

Reason #1: It helps declutter the house.

The older a person is, the more likely he or she has acquired many items. Many of those items, though, are unnecessary. They might even begin taking up too much space, being stuffed in boxes that are left along the hall, in spare bedrooms, and elsewhere.

If the elderly person has a tendency to be surrounded by a lot of unnecessary items, especially those that could pose tripping hazards or other risk factors, it’s a good idea to begin going through these items and selecting which ones can be sold or donated or given away to close family members or friends.

When the house is decluttered, the senior won’t have to worry as much every time they get out of bed, especially in the middle of the night if they have to get a drink or use the bathroom.

Reason #2: It helps them evaluate safety.

When going through all of these excess items in the house, the senior can determine their own safety. They may even rely on close family members and friends to help them determine whether their safety is compromised or not.

They might discover a loose step or the fact there’s no grab bars or shower seat that could support them. Whatever safety issue is noticed, it should be addressed as soon as possible.

Reason #3: It will lead to more activity.

The more active a person is, especially as they are advancing in years, the healthier they can be. When the senior is going to their house, boxing up items, figuring out what they can sell, and then helping to set up a garage sale, they are probably going to be quite active.

This activity can provide them a great deal of exercise that can be extremely beneficial to their overall health and well-being.

Home Helpers of Northern Lehigh Valley is locally owned and operated by Vicki Crow and Brian Day. We have experience and knowledge of issues that seniors and their families face every day. Prior to owning Home Helpers, we had over 40 combined years of sales and business experience. We experienced firsthand the value of professional in-home care and our ownership of Home Helpers is our way of providing senior care services to families in the Northern Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas. We provide the same level of care and attention to detail that we would expect for our own family. We chose to get involved with non-medical home care based on personal experiences that both myself and my husband experienced with our grandparents. My grandmother lived alone and my father lived over 500 miles away, when she suffered a stroke she needed extra help around the house. My father and his brother were able to find a care giver that would come in and help around the house, provided companionship and above all else a safety net for my father and my uncle to know someone was checking in on Grandma. When Grandma suffered a second stroke, the caregiver found her and got her the help she needed. We know there are a lot of families like ours that need that peace of mind of knowing someone is helping a loved one when they can't be there.
