What is a lifeline? The term initially referred to a flotation device tied to a rope that would be carried on ships. If somebody fell overboard, for whatever reason, the ship might take a long time to stop. The larger the ship, the longer the stopping distance. In some cases, it could take well over a mile or more for a massive cruise ship to come to a full stop at speed. If somebody did happen to fall over, the lifeline could be the only thing that keeps them alive (thus the name).
For some families, supporting an elderly individual can feel overwhelming.
It can feel as though they just fell overboard in their life and into rough seas. A person who has never tried to tread water in rough seas probably has no idea how challenging it can be. Waves are cresting over 10 feet, gravity takes its toll quickly, drawing the person under the surface of water every time the wave drops down. Usually, it doesn’t take very long for somebody to become completely worn out.
That could be exactly how it feels for some people when someone else needs help daily.
They didn’t expect this. They had no plans to become a family caregiver. Even though they knew their mother or father was getting older, that heart attack or stroke seemed to come on suddenly. Now it appears as though they can’t do anything on their own, and these family members feel compelled to step up.
Some people do it out of a sense of responsibility and others because they would feel guilty if they just turned their back on this senior. Whatever the case was in the beginning, before long people realize just how rough those seas are and how difficult it is to stay afloat.
Home care agencies offer some of the best lifelines for families.
They provide experienced, honest, and caring aides who can support elderly and disabled clients with just about any tasks they need to accomplish each day. Some agencies also provide transportation services for their clients to take them to the store, to doctors’ appointments, the mall, or even to visit friends every once in a while.
A family support system or network can get a break. They can feel as though somebody just threw them a lifeline and they can get back to their normal routines while knowing full well the person they care about is being taken care of properly. It’s a wonderful asset to have on hand and keep in mind.
